Before you book
Provisional licence, theory, payment and private practice.
What do I need to start driving lessons?
You need to be at least 17 (or 16 if you receive the enhanced rate mobility component of PIP) and hold a provisional driving licence. Apply on GOV.UK — the learner links above take you there.
How many lessons will I need?
The DVSA recommends around 44 hours of professional lessons plus private practice. Everyone learns at a different pace — this is only an average.
How long is a lesson?
Lessons can be 1, 1½ or 2 hours depending on your availability and your instructor.
Do I need to pass my theory test first?
No — you can start lessons with a valid provisional licence. Pupils get free access to the Theory Test Pro app to practise for the theory exam.
How do I pay?
Cash or bank transfer to your instructor. Online transfers may carry a small fee.
How many lessons should I take a week?
Continuity helps. Two to four hours a week is a good rhythm; two-hour lessons usually mean faster progress. Mini-intensives are available if you want to pass sooner.
Who can take me out for private practice?
They must be over 21, qualified to drive that type of vehicle (manual licence for a manual car), and have held a full licence for 3 years (UK, EU, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein). Driving without the right supervision can mean a fine of up to £1,000 and 6 penalty points.
Can I have evening and weekend lessons?
Yes — most instructors offer evenings and weekends. These slots book up first, so it can take a little longer to fit you in.
Can I choose my instructor?
Yes. We’ll match you based on your preferences. If you’d like to switch later, just say — no awkwardness.
